My Life as a Nurse Practitioner

I went back to school at the tender age of 48!!!!! to become a family nurse practitioner – NOT to be a “doctor-lite”, but to provide healthcare where healthcare was less available and accessible. I graduated with my Masters degree (I know – me? with a Masters degree?!?!?!) in May 2012 – and it has been a crazy ride since then.

More than once my tender little idealistic feelings have been hurt – by other providers in a turf war; by insurance companies tying my hands and leaving me helpless to do the right thing for vulnerable people; and by those with strong opinions on both (all!) sides of the healthcare debate slamming the crap out of those I consider to be our brothers and sisters, whatever our differences.

But here I am, and here I will stay. Because this was a lifelong dream of mine. Period. And that’s not something you let other people define.
